It is axiomatic that the regular practice of Sanchin improves one’s physical and spiritual self. In fact, as set forth in my Sanchin DVD and Book, I submit that the battles of Sanchin (“Three Battles”) are the physical battle, or aspect of life, and the spiritual aspect and the misunderstood metaphysical aspect of life. To better understand the import and benefit of Sanchin as it relates to the physical and spiritual battles we need to dissect and analyze the meaning of a Kata that is within the curriculum of the Goshin-Do Karate-Do style of Karate and is taught immediately prior to Sanchin. That Kata is called Taikiyoku. Learning Taikiyoku is not a condition precedent to learning Sanchin. Sanchin can be studied and practiced without ever learning Taikiyoku. In fact, Taikiyoku is not within the catalogue of protocols of Jiriki Kata-Do. However, an exploration and dissection of the principles of Taikiyoku aids in understanding two of the three aspects of Sanchin, to wit: the physical aspect and the spiritual aspect. The third aspect, the metaphysical aspect, I submit, is barely even understood in the martial arts.
The kanji, Japanese calligraphy, for Taikiyoku is composed of three separate radicals, or characters, namely, “Tai” meaning “Body”, “Ki” meaning “Spirit” and “Yoku” being the verb “To build.” Thus, the Kanji for Taikiyoku translates as “To build the body and the spirit.”

An exploration and dissection of the translation of Taikiyoku is a condition precedent for a probing analysis of the physical and spiritual aspects of Sanchin. To this end, we parse Taikiyoku into the two aspects the Kata aspires to build and ask the pivotal questions, “To what end do we build our body?’ and “To what end do we build our spirit?”
In so far as we tend to understand our physical world more readily than the spiritual component of life, let us dissect the question as to the desired purpose of building one’s body first. In Part Two of this article, I shall address the aspect of Taikiyoku that concerns building one’s spirit. So now we proceed to the question of, “To what end do we build our body?”
The answer to this question lies outside of the vacuous realm of craving with bated breath the obnoxious “6-pack abs”, “buns of steel” or any other such egocentric, commercially-driven sense of the desired physical embodiment of societal expectations. Rather, the key to understanding the concept to build one’s body espoused by Taikiyoku rests squarely within the four corners of my dynamic ideology of Jiriki Kata-Do. The physical well-being ascribed to Jiriki Kata-Do envisions neither temporary statuesque portrayals of fleeting physical perfections, nor even athleticism. The physical well-being of Jiriki Kata-Do describes a state of physical health, a soundness of one’s body to serve the body’s intended purpose. The purpose of one’s body, in the most simplistic terms is to serve as a physical cocoon for the spirit, to sustain life and be fully capable of motion. Further, unlike the modern, egocentric, portrayal of physical perfection, this state of physical well being proscribed by Jiriki Kata-Do is not affected by the passage of time or one’s chronological age.
This state of physical being encapsulated in Jiriki Kata-Do is born of the expression of “to build the body” within the arena of Goshin-Do Karate-Do, to wit: physical well-being capable not only of mobility but also self-preservation by way of the art of self-defense found within Karate-Do. A more cutting-edge understanding of the Jiriki Kata-Do concept of “to build the body” lies on the periphery philosophical edge of the transformation from Goshin-Do Karate-Do to Jiriki Kata-Do. Philosophical mandate of Karate-Do, including Goshin-Do Karate-Do, dictates that the body which one desires to build be defined in terms of the overall macro “body.” That is to say that one’s general body and systems (such as organs, bones, and muscles) is built and defended via the techniques and Kata of Karate. Jiriki Kata-Do postulates that such a definition of the body in terms of it’s macro self is restricted.
Jiriki Kata-Do seeks to define the body in terms of developing scientific information as to the micro body; namely the cells and interaction of cells upon which the organs, muscles, bones and the body itself is built. What does this paradigm of exploring the nurturing of one’s body from the micro level involve?
Specific answers may be found within the Sanchin DVD and book which is available to those readers that have purchased either of these products and are thus privy to my e-support system which provides, inter alia, such advice. However, here are a few “teaser” considerations submitted to whet your appetite and stimulate your craving for additional insights available through the purchase of these products.
The Jiriki Kata-Do concept of “To build the body” through protocols, including Sanchin, involves the following considerations:
Cellular Integrity: The manner in which Sanchin builds the body so as to stimulate existing cells to achieve cellular well-being and thereby achieve a healthy macro-body;
Cellular Processes: The methodology by which Sanchin nurtures cellular processes, to wit: the exchange of cellular blood gases, excretion of cellular waste & cellular interaction and similar microscopic processes;
Cellular Cognition: Exploration of this term-of-art within Jiriki Kata-Do as it applies to Sanchin and the subsequent protocols of Jiriki Kata-Do (See Endnote # 1 defining cellular cognition);
Cellular Regeneration: Science recognizes that, due to on-going cellular regeneration, notwithstanding one’s chronological age, one’s body, on a cellular level, is not older than approximately ten years old. Jiriki Kata-Do, and Sanchin, explores the manner in which cells are contemporaneously programed through Sanchin to achieve cellular well-being so as to replicate healthier cells, that desire the nurturing effects of Sanchin, in the future; (See Endnote # 2);
Macrocosmic Symbiosis: The manner in which our most elemental body, the cells, interacts with the external cellular-atomic world environment so as to foster a symbiotic physical environmental relationship that is conducive to overall physical well-being;
Stellar Synchronization: Examines the manner in which Jiriki Kata-Do and Sanchin fosters acknowledgement of the scientific phenomenon whereby all elements on Earth and in our bodies were manufactured in the universe and specifically in the chemical and nuclear processes of stars and comprehends the fact that the air we breath is composed of such stellar elements which our body’s require for life.

Has your desire for more been stimulated? Intrigued by this ideological analysis? Want more? Then, for a very reasonable price, purchase my Sanchin Kata DVD and have access to the full treasure trove of understanding to be found within Jiriki Kata-Do – and - SANCHIN. Information on how to purchase the DVD or book is shown below.
Until Part Two of the Taikiyoku series, I remain in the ideology espoused by Taikiyoku – building my body & my spirit, and, more importantly, conceptualizing the full implications thereof,

ENDNOTES:
1.The following is a basic explanation of “cellular cognition” for the general reader of this weblog. A full discussion of cellular cognition is made available to those readers that desire to unlock the secret knowledge of Sanchin and Jiriki Kata-Do through either the Sanchin DVD and/or book.
Cellular Cognition is the elemental evolution of the concept of “muscle-memory.” Through the practice of martial arts technique, Kata & protocols, including those of Goshin-Do Karate-Do, the Karate-Ka (practitioner of Karate) develops a primordial condition known in modern times as “muscle-memory” whereby a memory or consciousness, if you will, is ascribed to the muscles so as to enable them to act without the mind’s imposing an intention to so act. Cellular-cognition, which is a term-of-art unique to Jiriki Kata-Do, takes the concept of muscle-memory and applies it on a microscopic level to those cells themselves of which all muscle and body components are composed. Thus, the cells themselves are imbued with a cognitive ability to exist and subsequently self-replicate in a pure manner as intended by nature and fostered through Sanchin.
2. Traditional martial arts literature and theory is replete with descriptions of the manner in which Sanchin improves the development of muscle, bones, sinew and tendons. However, the martial arts genre looks at the macro environment of these bodily components. Jiriki Kata-Do ideology demands an understanding of the micro bodily aspects of Sanchin so as to appreciate that the body is “built” or improved on a cellular level.Thus, as existing cells which are improved or physically-conditioned, while they will die, upon replication, they will replicate the improved version of the cell.
